START Saar Scholarship program for secondary students with a migration background

In 2005, the Gemeinnützige Hertie Stiftung and the ASKO Europa-Stiftung, together with the Ministry of Education and Culture of Saarland, launched the project "START Saar: Schülerstipendien für engagierte Schüler mit Migrationshintergrund" (Scholarships for committed secondary students with a migration background) in Saarland. Since 2007, the START-Stiftung gemeinnützige GmbH, Frankfurt, a subsidiary of the Hertie-Stiftung, has coordinated the program nationwide, now in as many as 15 German federal states.

START Saar aims to accompany young people on their way to obtaining a high school graduation or a vocational qualification. It offers them better opportunities for successful integration and civic participation and promotes their civic commitment.

START supports socially committed and high-performing secondary students with a migration background. In addition to good / very good academic performance, the social, family and financial background of the candidates is also taken into account in the selection process. The scholarship holders receive a monthly education allowance as well as a laptop and a printer until they successfully complete their schooling or vocational training.

The ASKO Europa-Stiftung is entrusted with the regional coordination of START Saar.

Record number of applicants - 1,800 apply for START scholarships

Almost 1,800 applications for START scholarships were submitted this year. Despite, or perhaps because of, the particularly difficult circumstances due to the Corona pandemic, so many young people have decided they want to make a difference in this society and help shape the future of our country.

Virtual selection interviews with the most promising applicants will take place in May and June 2021. Before the summer vacations, the young people will find out whether they will be accepted into the START program from August.

In Saarland, 9 students will be accepted into the START program.
The total number of students in the Saarland in the 2021/2022 school year will therefore be 30 scholarship holders.
