In 2005, the Gemeinnützige Hertie Stiftung and the ASKO Europa-Stiftung, together with the Ministry of Education and Culture of Saarland, launched the project "START Saar: Schülerstipendien für engagierte Schüler mit Migrationshintergrund" (Scholarships for committed secondary students with a migration background) in Saarland. Since 2007, the START-Stiftung gemeinnützige GmbH, Frankfurt, a subsidiary of the Hertie-Stiftung, has coordinated the program nationwide, now in as many as 15 German federal states.
START Saar aims to accompany young people on their way to obtaining a high school graduation or a vocational qualification. It offers them better opportunities for successful integration and civic participation and promotes their civic commitment.
START supports socially committed and high-performing secondary students with a migration background. In addition to good / very good academic performance, the social, family and financial background of the candidates is also taken into account in the selection process. The scholarship holders receive a monthly education allowance as well as a laptop and a printer until they successfully complete their schooling or vocational training.
The ASKO Europa-Stiftung is entrusted with the regional coordination of START Saar.
