From around 30 impressive applications, 9 committed students from the Saarland were selected. The ASKO Europa-Stiftung and the START-Stiftung will accompany them for three years on their educational and life paths, teach them the values and skills and enable them to have experiences that will enable them to actively participate in shaping our society and democracy. The young people will learn how to effectively take on responsibility and become role models for others themselves.
The ceremonial acceptance of the new START scholarship holders in Saarland took place on September 12, 2022 at the Ministry of Education and Culture of Saarland.
In 2005, the Gemeinnützige Hertie Stiftung and the ASKO Europa-Stiftung, together with the Ministry of Education and Culture of Saarland, launched the project "START Saar: Schülerstipendien für engagierte Schüler mit Migrationshintergrund" (Scholarships for committed secondary students with a migration background) in Saarland. Since 2007, the START-Stiftung gemeinnützige GmbH, Frankfurt, a subsidiary of the Hertie-Stiftung, has coordinated the program nationwide, now in as many as 15 German federal states.
START Saar aims to accompany young people on their way to obtaining a high school graduation or a vocational qualification. It offers them better opportunities for successful integration and civic participation and promotes their civic commitment.
START supports socially committed and high-performing secondary students with a migration background. In addition to good / very good academic performance, the social, family and financial background of the candidates is also taken into account in the selection process. The scholarship holders receive a monthly education allowance as well as a laptop and a printer until they successfully complete their schooling or vocational training.
The ASKO Europa-Stiftung is entrusted with the regional coordination of START Saar.
